Robertta Meiss Glenn, 101, died March 7, 2008, at Providence Extended Care.
No service is planned. Burial will be at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.
Robertta was born Oct. 1, 1906, in Sloughouse, Calif., and raised on a cattle ranch there. Robertta was the second daughter of four born to Benjamin and Jenny Meiss. Robertta graduated from Sacramento High School and attended Stanford School of Nursing in San Francisco. She graduated in 1928, and in 1929 married LaVerne Polk Glenn of Pleasant Grove, Calif. After their marriage, Robertta and LaVerne moved to Omaha, Neb., where he attended Creighton Medical School. After his graduation, they returned to California and lived at Folsom Prison, where LaVerne was the prison physician. They moved to north Sacramento in 1936 and LaVerne opened a medical office. Before retiring to raise her family, Robertta worked as a nurse in LaVerne’s medical office and then for the Tuberculosis Association of Sacramento.
Robertta and LaVerne moved to Anchorage 30 years ago. They continued their lifelong interest in hunting, fishing and in nature. They contributed often to the Alaska Zoo and erected the flagpole, which stands at the entrance.
“Robertta lived a long and happy life,” her family recalled. “She maintained a positive attitude and was loving and supportive to all her family. Her strength, humor and independence have always been an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She is sadly missed but will forever be remembered as a loving, strong woman and the role model her family uses to live by. We do not mourn our mother’s passing but rejoice in the fact that she continues to surround us with love and with memories of a wonderful, full life lived.
“Robertta attended church in Anchorage with her family. She knew the Lord, was saved and truly blessed by his presence in her life.”
Robertta was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by her children, Leland Glenn, Marium Clare, Joanne Martin and Gary Glenn; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Meiss Richards; and many nieces and nephews.
